Baidyanath Sarpagandha Ghan Vati
Sarpagandha ghana vati is a classical Ayurvedic preparation desribed in Siddhyoga Samgraha. It contains Sarpagandha extract, Khursaniajwain extract, Jatamansi extract and Piplamool churn. This formula has been used to control high blood pressure since a long time. Even modern medicine system use Sarpagndha as a key ingredient in antihyperttensive drugs.
Ingredients of Sarpagandha Ghana vati :
Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina)
Sarpagandha has been used as an antihypertensive herb both in Ayurveda and Modern system of medicine . It is bitter tonic and possesses well marked sedative properties and was used as remedy for poisonous snake bites and in insomnia and irritative conditions of the central nervous system. All together more than 20 alkaloids have been isolated from Rauwolfia serpentina including Reserpine which is used as a tranquiliser, hypotensive agent, and for various psychoneurotic conditions mainly where anxiety plays an important aggravating role. It is also used in psychiatric disorder, hysteria, schizophrenia ,epilepsy and anxiety stated insomnia and depression.
Khursani Ajwain (Hyoscyamus niger)
It acts as sedative, antispasmodic ,anodyne, sopirific and antaphrodoisiac, Paralyses the end organs of motor nerves without affecting sensation or consciousness.The leaves and fruits contains 3 alkaloids known as coniine, methyl coniine and conhydrine.
Jatamansi (Nordostachys jatamansi):
This herb is known as Spike nard. It has been found in Himalayan forests. It is bitter in taste. It can be used in the treatment of several nervous and convulsive disorders such as hysteria, epileptic fits ,and certain disturbances caused by menopause. It also acts as a tranquiliser. It is used for deworming and as purgative for children. It is also used in the treatment of respiratory disorders. It helps in dysmenorrhoea (painful and difficult menstruation) and also used to regularize the menstruation.
Pippali (Piper longum):
It improves Agni (digestion) & stamina, used in respiratory disorders like chronic bronchitis, cough & cold, disease of spleen & abdomen, rheumatoid arthritis, fever. It is also used as mild purgative.

It helps regulate blood pressure and maintains the balance between supply and demand of myocardial oxygen. It helps regulate lipid metabolism by increasing the protective HDL-cholesterol while lowering both total and bad LDL-cholesterol
Some caution before taking Sarpagandhabhan bati:
Allergies—Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to rauwolfia alkaloids.
Pregnancy—Too much use of rauwolfia alkaloids during pregnancy may cause unwanted effects (difficult breathing, low temperature, loss of appetite) in the baby.
Breastfeeding—Rauwolfia alkaloids pass into breast milk and may cause unwanted effects (difficult breathing, low temperature, loss of appetite) in infants of mothers taking large doses of this medicine. Be sure you have discussed this with your doctor before taking this medicine.
Suggested Dosage: 1 to 2 pills with water, after dinner / bed time or as directed by your health care practitioner.
