Ksheerabala
oil is a simple but potent blend specially formulated to ease the
nerves and sooth deep and chronic pain in the lower back and head. It is
a decoction of bala in black sesame oil and milk aimed at providing
both relaxation and rejuvenation to the muscles and nerves. Ksheerabala
unites the grounding and sattvic qualities of black sesame oil with the
nourishing and rejuvenating qualities of milk to deliver the potent
stress relieving power of bala to deep seated pain along the spine and
in the head. Bala is a very powerful herb, so much so that it is not
appropriate to be used on its own. It is therefore blended with milk and
sesame oil to both bring balance and enhancement to its potency,
rendering ksirabala oil a unique and simple yet powerful blend that has
brought relief to many throughout the ages.
The root of the bala
plant is squeezed and pressed to provide the juice that is used in
Ksheerabala oil. Bala is a singularly powerful nervine which penetrates
deep to the source of nerve and muscle pain by alleviating an aggravated
pitta. It has cooling and astringent effects which work to reduce pain
and inflammation by first cooling and then eliminating toxins
accumulated as a result of agitation. This works well to relieve burning
in the skin and with conditions such as fibromyalgia and multiple
sclerosis, wherein due to prolonged stress the hyperactive metabolic
enzymes begin to corrode the nerve linings and eventually the nerves
themselves. This results in severe burning or aching pain in the nerves
which can have potentially very serious implications. Bala is very
effective in cooling the overactive pitta which is the cause of such
problems, providing both symptomatic relief and treating the cause of
the condition.
Bala is first decocted in milk to augment its
cooling effects, which provides balance to the dry detoxification of
Bala with the highly nutritive and rejuvenating qualities of milk. Milk
is cooling and sweet in its effects. While the cooling effect of milk
augments that of Bala providing additional relief of inflammation and
swelling, its sweetness which is nourishing and moist offers balance to
the dry and constricting effects of Bala’s astringency. In addition,
milk delivers accompanying herbs to the plasma and the blood, rendering
it a great vehicle for bala’s treatment of pitta. Furthermore, milk is
soothing to the mucous membranes and softening to the skin. These
complimentary qualities render milk a particularly suitable partner for
external application.
Sesame oil is regarded as a most sattvic
oil and is well suited as the final partner in this trio. By contrast,
sesame oil is heating in effect. This brings balance to the cooling
natures of both bala and milk, and gives the blend well rounded potency
which allows it to provide additional and otherwise latent benefits.
Sesame oil is also sweet and highly nourishing to the body. The
combination of the warming effect brings comfort to the joints and
muscles while its sweetness augments the nutritive effects already
present in the milk. This widens and deepens the range of relief of this
blend, making it effective for treating arthritic and rheumatic pain as
well as nervous disorders. Further, the cornucopia of vitamins and
minerals present in sesame oil give a very grounding effect on the often
erratic vata. This helps to calm and clarify the mind and restore it
with a sense of unity.
This triad is a balance of penetrating
and relieving power in a stable and supportive medium. This singular
combination renders it both potent and safe, whether for occasional or
long term use. It is particularly effective in treating lower back pain
as found with sciatica or nervo-muscular pain as found in chronic
migraines. It treats the symptoms and the causes by both relaxing the
muscles, and calming the nerves and the blood. However, this well
balanced concoction is useful also for a wide range of conditions
including arthritis, rheumatism, general joint pain, burning of the skin
and nerves, insomnia and nervousness. It is both deeply healing and
