Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a member of the ginger family, Zingaberaceae and has long been used for healing in Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and other traditional medicine systems practiced in India. It is showing promise in many areas ranging from anti oxidant activity, to anti cancer properties, anti inflammatory actions, lowering cholesterol, protection of the cardiovascular system and detoxification/blood purifying properties.
In Indian systems of medicine, turmeric has been used as a stomachic, tonic and blood purifier. Curcumin is the major component of Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and extensive scientific research on curcumin has demonstrated its potent antioxidant properties. Turmeric holds a high place in Ayurvedic medicine as a "cleanser of the body" and today science is finding a growing list of diseased conditions which turmeric's active ingredient heals. The anti-inflammatory compounds present in turmeric appear to ease inflammation. This makes it potentially useful for relieving the inflammation in wrist and hand joints associated with carpal tunnel syndrome and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Turmeric can also benefit skin conditions including: eczema, psoriasis and acne, for it is a potent detoxifier.
In India, Turmeric has been used extensively in cookery for thousands of years. It is a common ingredient in Indian food, such as curry powder, and yellow mustard and is used as a spice to flavor, color, and preserve foods. Turmeric is pungent, bitter and astringent, not sweet like ginger. Turmeric today continues to be used very widely throughout India as an alternative medicine, spice and also in herbal beauty care.
According to Dr. Vasant Lad (famous Ayurvedic practitioner), "Turmeric gives the energy of the Divine Mother and grants prosperity. It is effective for cleansing the chakras, and purifying the channels of the subtle body."
Also known as Indian
saffron and yellow root, this bright yellow powder is the dried and
ground rhizome of the Curcuma longa root, which is a member of the
ginger (Zingiberacea) family. Turmeric is a tropical plant with yellow
flowers and leaves that are dark green above and light green below. The
rhizomes have a brownish-yellow, somewhat scaly outer skin and a bright
orange-yellow flesh, which smells spicy when bruised. The health
benefits of turmeric-- which has a long tradition of use in Ayurvedic
medicine -- remains a hot topic among natural health advocates.
Due to numerous scientific
research studies including those from Yale University and the U.S.
National Institutes of Health, scientists and physicians around the
world are extensively researching the many potential health benefits of
Turmeric. Some studies suggest that Turmeric may have significant
therapeutic potential including its apparent ability to positively
influence inflammation, circulation and immune function. The Organic
Turmeric that we supply exists how nature intented it to be and is free
of toxic chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and does not
contain any genetically modified Turmeric plant sources.
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been
used for more than 4,000 years in India to treat a variety of ailments.
Turmeric is widely used as a food coloring Spice and gives Indian curry
its distinctive flavor and yellow color. It is also used in mustard and
to color butter and cheese. Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine
as an anti-inflammatory, to treat digestive and liver problems, skin
diseases, and wounds. The curcumin in turmeric has been shown to
stimulate the production of bile by the gallbladder. Curcumin is also a
powerful antioxidant; antioxidants scavenge particles in the body known
as free radicals, which damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even
cause cell death. Antioxidants can neutralize free radicals and may
reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause. In addition,
curcumin reduces inflammation by lowering levels of two inflammatory
enzymes (called COX-2 and LOX) in the body and stops platelets from
clumping together to form blood clots.
In India, Turmeric (Curcuma longa)
has been a traditional household item for centuries. The rhizomes are
boiled, baked and ground into the fragrant, yellow-orange powder used as
an ingredient in curry. Turmeric has also been used throughout history
as a food preservative. Turmeric has become a popular herbal supplement
due to the potent antioxidant properties of it's active constituent
curcuminoids.
