 Product Description:

Sanskrit Name:Triphala

English Name: Three Fruits

Botanical Name: Emblica officinalis, Terminalia Chebula & Terminalia Belerica

Ayurvedic Energetics:V=P=K=

Triphala, formulated by Ayurvedic Practitioners thousands of years ago is considered the most effective and safest laxative. Triphala is mild, non-habit forming, and a rejuvenative.

Triphala is so effective because its three herbs are potent healers. Triphala is considered a 'tridoshic rasayana', having balancing and rejuvenating effects on the three constitutional elements that govern human life: Vata which regulates the nervous system, Pitta which maintains metabolic processes, and Kapha which supports structural integrity. Triphala uniquely cleanses and detoxifies at the deepest organic levels without depleting the body's reserves.

Triphala combines both nutritional as well as blood and liver cleansing (detoxifying) actions. This makes Triphala one of the most valuable herbal preparations in the world. A popular folk saying in India is, No mother? Don’t worry so long as you have Triphala. The reason is that Indian people believe that triphala is able to care for the internal organs of the body as a mother cares for her children.

Amalaki (Emblica Officinalis) one of Ayurveda's greatest rejuvenators and a strong natural anti-oxidant, also helps to boost the immune system. It’s the highest natural known source of vitamin C. Having 20 times the vitamin C content of an orange.

Haritaki (Terminalia Chebula) the Tibetan "king of medicine", a classic heart-brain-longevity tonic, is often depicted in the extended palm of the Buddha.

Bibhitaki (Terminalia Belerica) a powerful rejuvenative that reduces liver and heart disease, also improves the voice, vision and promotes the growth of hair.

Triphala is a powerful rasayana (Path – ayana - of the Juice - rasa) and one of the few tridoshic herbal treatments in ayurvedic medicine. A tridoshic herb or herbal combination is one which has the power to alleviate problems with all three doshas. Triphala, meaning three-fruit, is composed of the three fruits Amalaki, Haritaki, and Vibhitaki. Each of these three fruits is very powerful in themselves rendering their combination a traditional standard for many ayurvedic regimens. The essence or rasa of each ingredient is particularly disposed to the calming of one of the three doshas, and together they work synergistically to bring overall balance to the patient. Lets take a closer look at each of these fruit individually, and then begin to uncover the power which is unleashed by their unique coordination in Triphala.

Amalaki is traditionally known as ‘The Nurse’ for her broad and potent healing effects. She bears five of the six tastes enabling her to treat a great variety of ailments, and is one of the very rare fruit to be tridoshic all by herself. Though she bears five tastes she is primarily sour, with a sweet vipraka (post-digestive effect), and a cooling virya (energy). Amalaki’s sweet effects and astringent tastes give her nutritive and rejuvenative actions which are effective with all tissue types, both internal and external.

Due to her sweet vipraka and cooling virya she is known to moisten the digestive system and be a refrigerant. This makes her particularly well suited for the treatment of Pitta imbalance, as this is generally manifest as an excess of heat and dryness in the body. Although, being tridoshic, she is also helpful to restore moisture to the lower digestive tract due to her sweet vipraka, a common effect of Vata imbalance, and yet its pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes help to dry excess moisture in other parts of the body. Though this may seem like a contradiction, it is important to remember that vipraka or post-digestive effect will only effect one after digestion in the lower portions of the gasto-intestinal tract. The wisdom and subtlety of this Nurse has much to be admired.

Haritaki is likewise a plant renowned for its great healing power. She takes her name both because she carries away (harate) all diseases, and because she is sacred to Shiva (Hara), and is known as “The King of Medicines” elsewhere in eastern medical traditions. As Amalaki, she bears five of the six tastes, all except salty. However, conversely her primary taste is astringent, vipraka sweet, and virya heating. This combination makes it particularly well suited for aggravated Vata, as the sweetness brings moisture to the lower bowels and its heating energy helps to revitalize the excessive cold of such conditions. It is known to increase awareness and have nutritive and restorative effects on the central nervous system, both of which are helpful to one suffering from overactive Vata.

Haritaki is also one of the very few tridoshic herbs, and has a wide range of applications. She is used to treat skin disorders, even leprosy, in addition mal-nutritive disorders like anemia and anorexia. She is also used as an expectorant and to treat chronic coughs and excessive secretions of mucus. Yet further she has been shown helpful to reduce flatulence, and for the expulsion of gastro-intestinal parasites such as worms. She has a history and range of use which far exceeds the limitations of this brief description, and needless to say she is a powerful ally in this ayurvedic staple.

Vibhitaka in Sanskrit means ‘one who keeps you away from the diseases’ or literally ‘fearless’ of all diseases. Her small dry fruit has a powerful drying, astringing and strengthening effect on mucus membranes all throughout the body, but particularly in the lungs, intestines and urinary systems. It has an astringent taste, a heating energy, and a sweet vipraka (post-digestive effect). This combination is a powerful for Kapha imbalance, which removes excess buildup in the respiratory, digestive, and urinary systems by liquefying them and expelling them. In particular, it is effective in dissolving stones in the urinary tract, and removing parasites in the digestive tract. Though its primary function is to balance Kapha aggravation it is also tridoshic. It has a laxative effect which is useful in treating Vata conditions of the lower digestive system as well as causing a toning of the stomach and encouragement of the appetite without aggravating Pitta. Externally, vibhitaka is known to promote hair growth and to be an anti-septic useful in the treatment of small wounds and rashes.

In addition, recent scientific analysis has shown all three of these to have high levels of vitamin C and anti-oxidants. For example, one Amalaki fruit contains 3000mg of vitamin C which is in a heat stable form that is not compromised during processing, this is as much as two-dozen oranges! Other research has shown each to have potential for use against cancer and several other severe and chronic diseases.

Now that we have seen what each of these is by themselves, let us take a look at the beautiful and potent union they make in the prized rasayana Triphala. Each of them is tridoshic in itself, and this provides a firm and broad foundation for their combination and its application. However, their union is not simply a redundant amalgamation, but rather a synergistic marriage of three well rounded individuals whose particular strengths support and compliment eachother. Amalaki is tridoshic, but her sweet and cooling energies give her the power to rein in excess Pitta. Haritaki is again tridoshic, but her sweet and heating energies give her reign over the wiles of flown-away Vata. Finally, vibhitaka, likewise tridoshic, has the particular disposition to open the gates and flush out Kaphic build-up. Together these three layer their individual tridoshic powers upon their combined tridoshic power making Triphala the trifecta of tridoshic rasayanas.

Triphala Benefits and Uses: Triphala has many uses, and is a central part of many formulations. Its effects can be powerful and should be used in moderate doses. For Triphala tea, or Triphala juice, mix a teaspoon or so of Triphala churna with boiling water at night and left to cool to be drunken in morning, the grind not drunken, but is then remixed with more boiling water and left to cool until evening before eating. It should be drunken on an empty stomach so as not to disturb digestion. One may also prepare a Triphala tincture, or extract for use with other herbs in smaller quantities. Triphala eye washes are also quite effective for cleansing the eyes and killing infections. Organic Triphala is a very safe formulation and the best Triphala that one can buy, but is contra-indicated for those with diarrhea, very thin people, and pregnant women, as it may be harmful.

Triphala Side Effects: Triphala has been used safely in India for several centuries and it doesn’t have any side effects at all. However if taken in excessively high doses, weight loss and diarrhea may occur.

About Gopala Ayurveda:

The Hindi meaning Gopala is ‘The Nurturer of the Cow’. The cow is an auspicious blessing from Mother Earth for the good of all humankind. They who care for the blessings which our Mother has given us, care for the Mother herself. It is through this care that the bountiful provision which is our inheritance is enjoyed, preserved and multiplied for ourselves, our children and generations to come. This is our deepest desire and purpose: that all humanity may have life and have it more fully. Our name in every way reflects this desire and the means by which we propose to pursue it. It is for this reason that we use only 100% organically grown, harvested, and processed herbs in our products, support sustainable economics, and endeavor to continue the millennia old tradition of natural and holistic science.

The roots of Gopala Ayurveda reach deep into the rich and ancient naturopathic tradition of Ayurveda. Utilizing the wisdom of this four thousand year old science with the technological potential of modern science we render these ancient formulations in a potent form, all the while maintaining faithful adherence to the formulae and therapies of the ancient texts. Gopala is a pioneer in purely organic ayurvedic supplements, herbs, and oils. We promote healthy foods and nutritional products, and despite utilizing the benefits of modern science and technology, we train a strict eye on all stages of development and processing to be sure that our products do not suffer contact with any toxic or synthetic chemicals. Since the birth of this project, we have focused on the development of safe and effective remedies that will help people lead richer and healthier lives.

Gopala is not simply organic, which means to be free from any chemicals, pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, artificial additives, preservatives, and heavy metals, but we are 100% Certified Organic, meaning that the customer has the added security of the USDA regulatory action which requires that all ingredients in all products be traceable through their processing history and to the place of origin.
