Shatavari or Asparagus Racemosus
The plant has been used in Ayurveda for various conditions. It is one of the most important of all herbs for female reproductive health. It is used to improve the quality and quantity of mother's milk when breastfeeding. This means it acts as a galactagogue to increase milk secretion during lactation. Shatavari supports all the metabolic processes to create good quality in all seven categories of bodily tissues.
The root of Shatavari, a relative of the vegetable asparagus, controls all three doshas, especially vata and pitta; in excess it may increase ama. It rejuvenates the female organs and blood, helps to build up the body, strengthens the immune system, increases rasa, milk and sexual secretions and so is aphrodisiac, improves intellect, digestion and physical strength and cures urinary tract disorders. It can be used in any pitta a condition in which ama is absent. It is usually given as a medicated ghee or is simmered in milk; when available, the juice of the fresh roots is used.
*************** About Himalaya Herbals: Eighty one years ago, on a visit to Burma, Himalaya's founder, Mr. M. Manal, saw restless elephants being fed with a root to pacify them. The plant from which this was taken is Rauwolfia serpentina. Fascinated by the plant's effect on elephants, he had it scientifically evaluated. After extensive research, Serpina®, the world's first anti-hypertensive drug, was launched in 1934. This legacy of researching nature forms the foundation of Himalaya's operations. Himalaya uses the tools of modern science to create pharmaceutical-grade ayurvedic products. We have pioneered research that has converted Ayurveda's herbal tradition into a complete range of proprietary formulations dedicated to healthy living and longevity. Today, these products have found acceptance with medical fraternities and serve the health and personal care needs of consumers in 82 countries. |
